Job Description

PATH is collaborating with the Tanzania Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and Zanzibar Ministry of Health (MOHSW & MOH), National and Zanzibar Tuberculosis and Leprosy Programs (NTLP & ZTLP), National and Zanzibar AIDS Control Programs (NACP & ZACP), and the Association of Private Health Facilities of Tanzania to support a coordinated public- and private-sector response to tuberculosis and HIV with support and funding through USAID and the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). 

 Specific responsibilities include:
  • Provide technical and management support to TB/HIV project and support Project Director in technical and managerial activities.
  • Supervise 4-5 staff.
  • Develop and review project work plans, track project progress, and prepare reports on deliverables.
  • Work closely with MOHSW Diagnostics Department, NTLP Medical Officer in-charge of Laboratory services, NTLP MDR Coordinator in strengthening the TB Laboratory network.
  • Build regional and district staff capacity in management of laboratory services, laboratory data management, quality assurance and diagnostics.
  • Support introduction of new techniques to diagnose TB, ex, GeneXpert
  • Support coordination and monitor implementation of all of PATH’s TB laboratory activities.
  • Oversee technical supervisory visits to PATH supported districts and provide feedback to all levels
  • Provide leadership and represent PATH in technical working groups and meetings with other partners.
  • Work with project staff to develop journal articles, presentations, and posters to promote project.
  • Organize and participate in project team meetings and participate in PATH's global TB team meetings.
  • Support and maintain close communication with the National TB and Leprosy Program and collaborate with other technical partners to ensure coordination of laboratory strengthening activities throughout Tanzania and in project-supported regions 

Required Skills
  • Ability to conduct training and build capacity of others in areas related to laboratory strengthening and diagnostics
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and maintain schedules for deliverables with excellent attention to detail.
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills to facilitate relations with the Government and local partners.
  • Ability to work in cross-cultural work environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communications in English and Kiswahili
  • Good computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office programs.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, negotiating and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with USAID projects and working with international organizations is preferred. 

Required Experience
  • MD or Masters in Microbiology with a minimum of 5 years to a maximum of 7 years.years of relevant TB laboratory experience or equivalent academic degree with experience in TB control and strengthening laboratory networks.
  •  Familiarity with in mycobacteriology laboratory work in Tanzania or elsewhere in Africa desirable
